Weltchys Notebook

Part Time Writer of Science Fiction and Fantasy. Hopefully a blog for Stories, both Long and Short

Hammer Keep

Below is my 100 word (ish) submission to the Friday Fictioneers. Photo prompt this week is courtesy of Jennifer Pendergast. Bit of a horror theme going on with this and my last submission. Too many cult films I guess.

As always, comments are appreciated. I try to read everyone’s submission, but with submissions reaching triple digits each week, it’s sometimes difficult to get round to each one. Therefore, I tend to read those who I follow, or who like / comment my story. And finally, I also try for a random selection from the list.

The Friday Fictioneers are a friendly group of online writers from all over the globe who endeavour to create short but fantastical tales with which to enthral and inspire both reader and writer alike. The genres and styles of writing are varied, so there is something for everyone to be found within its midst.

Hammer Keep

Seline arched her back, trying to banish tired muscles. Weary, the mountain paths had taken a toll on even her trail-hardened body.

“Not much of a welcome”, she commented. “Where’s the concierge?”

Her statement was met by a confused look. Spencer, her boyfriend, forced a smile before dumping his backpack on the floor.

“It’s an abandoned keep”, he replied. “Thought we’d stay the night.”

Seline frowned. “You’re sure it’s abandoned?”

Following her gaze, Spencer looked across the keep to an opened door. Standing within, though difficult to see, was the figure of a tall man wrapped in shadow. As he spoke, his voice carried through the air, dripping with a malevolence that chilled Seline to the bone.

“Welcome childe, but rest not, for damnation awaits thee.”

  1. Dear Weltchy,

Ominous tale. It seemed to me that Spencer is in on this evil with his knowing smile.

  2. Lovely little tale. I like the description, ‘tall man wrapped in shadow’ – gets my imagination working.

  3. Oh, dear! If, by some miracle, they live through this, I doubt she’ll ever allow Soencer to choose their lodgings again!!!

  4. Weltchy, Good and chilling story. O_o I think I’d back up and start running until I found a place to camp outside a long way from there. I’d prefer wild animals, etc. to that. Well done. 🙂 —Susan

  5. Better run.. run faster than the wind.. those chilling ghosts can’t leave the shadows anyway.

  6. Well, the ethereal apparition really is a barrel of laughs. I don’t know if Spencer’s in on it, but I hope Seline has enough energy left to run.

  7. Remind me never to go back-packing in those places EVER!
    Good story this week, Weltchy!

  8. the best option is to run and to stick together… but why do i have this feeling that they’re never going to find their way back home…? great story.

  9. Man, just when you think rest is in sight! Good tale well told.

  10. Geez, and they hiked all the way of the mountain for this? I wonder what type of damnation lies in store? Well written piece.

    • So many to pick from. Bearing in mind I’m a bit sleep deprived at the moment, I would go with being eternally stuck in the moment of being prodded awake just as you fall asleep. Thanks for reading

  11. I thoroughly enjoyed the creepiness of this story, and the character of Seline too. If I had a concrit, it would centre on the boyfriend and the line in which he laughs. Something about this line made it hard for me to get a grip on him or his personality. I can’t pinpoint it better than that, but hopefully if you choose to rework, it will give you a place to start.
