Scourge of the Seven Seas

Two weeks in a row, what’s going on here then!

Anyway, on with the story telling. Below is my latest submission for the Friday Fictioneers challenge. Photo prompt this week is courtesy of C Hase.

As always, comments are appreciated. I will try to read everyone’s submission, but with submissions reaching triple digits each week, it’s difficult to get round to everyone. Therefore, I try to read those who I follow, or who like / comment my story. I also hit a random selection from the list. You know know what gems you will find.

Finally, a short word on the weekly challenge. The Friday Fictioneers are a friendly group of online writers from all over the globe who endeavour to create short but fantastical tales with which to enthral and inspire both reader and writer alike. The genres and styles of writing are varied, so there’s something for everyone to be found within its midst.

Scourge of the Seven Seas

‘Take the slack!’

Muscles glistening with sweat, Pollux took hold of the chain and pulled, cold iron digging into flesh as calloused hands sought to halt movement. Grunting with effort, his rally cry was joined by the rest of the crew, desperate men lending strength to stop the chain running away.

With herculean effort, the chain snapped tight, tethering a monstrosity that had plagued the coast for years. A creature of legend, Pollux had stumbled across the dragon with luck, sleeping amongst half eaten carcasses and piles of gold pillaged from countless raids. Dead, the creature would fetch a king’s ransom, but Pollux had something far more adventurous in mind.

‘Quickly lads, tie it down!’

  1. Oh, what will Pollux do with the dragon? Mmmm. “as calloused hands sought to halt movement” – lovely line, Weltchy.

  2. Ooh, cool! I bet he’s wanting to go off dragon-riding. Great story 🙂

  3. “Something far more adventurous in mind”…will he dare to mount the dragon, and if so, does he have the strength and tenacity to control its flight? I’m sensing a sequel 😄

  4. Your story made me wonder about how was this chain handled and what it did to the people handling it. Never thought about that before. And what manner of creature would this chain be holding? Great adventures lie ahead, me thinks!

  5. but first he needs to tame the dragon. i wish him luck.

  6. Lovely work, Weltchy. Very fluid story. What a find! That’s got to be a mighty big dragon.

  7. Dear Weltchy,

Looks like the intro to a bigger adventure. Nicely done.

    Shalom,

    Rochelle

  8. Intriguing. Now what? … great opener.

  9. He’s quite the hero. Lots of action here and an ending that gets me wondering what he’s got in mind.

  10. Yes, I want to come along when he rides the dragon. Great writing, very in the moment.

  11. Great start to a longer story. This could make quite an adventure. Perfect for a young adult fantasy. Very well written, Weltchy.

  12. A dragon would be a cool ride indeed.. 🙂
