This week’s post gains inspiration from my two year son, Teddy, and his fondness of grated cheese and all things sweet.
Anyway, ‘Tales from the Kitchen’ is my latest submission for the Friday Fictioneers challenge. Photo prompt this week is courtesy of Raina Ng.
I will try to read everyone’s submission, unlike last week where I failed miserably in attempting to read other stories. Sorry if you read, liked or/and commented about mine and I did not return the favour.
Finally, a short word on the weekly challenge. The Friday Fictioneers are a friendly group of online writers from all over the globe who endeavour to create short but fantastical tales with which to enthral and inspire both reader and writer alike. The genres and styles of writing are varied, so there’s something for everyone to be found within its midst.
Tales from the Kitchen
Tiny hands slammed down into hard wood, accompanied by an eruption of flour and dough that spread quickly to the corners of the kitchen. It was hard to imagine that someone so small could cause such a large mess, but when Teddy was involved, anything was possible.
‘Nana, look!’
The shout was excited, a cute little dictator’s demand that his creation take pride of place. The dough had been cast aside, replaced with a pile of grated cheese smothered in strawberry jam, peanut butter and anchovy. A masterpiece of culinary haphazardry, Teddy scooped up a portion of “Cheesy volcano” with his spoon and offered it to his Grandmother, who already cringed with excitement.

Wonder how it would have tasted 🙂 Sweet Nana wouldn’t have had the heart to refuse, I guess.
June 10, 2015 at 3:11 pm
No chance of refusal. Stamping of feet, pouting and crying will see to that. Thanks for reading!
June 10, 2015 at 3:19 pm
Lovely. Pleased I wasn’t required to partake. Fun story.
June 10, 2015 at 3:20 pm
Cheers Patrick. Though if you have or ever have children, you may find you have no choice but to partake.
June 10, 2015 at 5:45 pm
Can’t wait to let him loose in my kitchen. NOT. Nice story.
June 10, 2015 at 5:58 pm
Hahaha. I bet you’ve had that same experience Sandra. Or at least something similar. Thanks for reading
June 10, 2015 at 6:31 pm
Oh. On a site note your link from the blue frog link is broken!
June 10, 2015 at 6:30 pm
lol…cringing with excitement…I wonder how it feels like. Nicely done.
June 10, 2015 at 6:31 pm
Not good I would think. Thanks for reading
June 10, 2015 at 8:19 pm
I’m cringing with something else than excitement.. I can promise you that.. I will have nightmares of this eruption.
June 10, 2015 at 8:25 pm
What’s not to like about a “cheesy volcano”! Thanks for reading Björn.
June 10, 2015 at 8:26 pm
The eruptions afterwards ?
June 10, 2015 at 8:26 pm
Hahaha. True!
June 10, 2015 at 10:09 pm
Like grandmother , like grandson. What a concoction. Has Teddy made one of these? A very dear take on the prompt.
June 11, 2015 at 7:10 am
Not quite yet. We’ve managed to avoid covering the cheese in strawberry jam so far. I believe it’s only a matter of time however. Thanks for reading Alicia
June 11, 2015 at 2:51 am
It might be good. I’m not sure about the anchovy though. If I were the Nana I might fib and say I am allergic.
June 11, 2015 at 7:08 am
Children have a way of seeing past those kind of fibs. Still, worth a try. Thanks for reading Dawn
June 11, 2015 at 2:53 am
no matter what he does, he’ll always be apple in nana’s eyes. 🙂
June 11, 2015 at 7:08 am
Indeed he is! Thanks for reading
June 11, 2015 at 10:58 am
I felt like I was right there. As grandparents we’ll let them do anything that we foresee as “cute” and worry about cleaning it up later. I’m sure Grandmother took photos and posted them on Facebook. I suppose Teddy tells everyone how “Daddy cut the cheese.” 🙂
June 11, 2015 at 11:34 am
You’re exactly right! Thanks Russell.
June 11, 2015 at 1:32 pm
I bet the Cheesy Volcano is actually quite tasty 🙂
June 12, 2015 at 9:33 am
I would beg to differ. But, switch the jam for pickle (Of the Branston variety, not Gerkins) and maybe!!! Thanks for reading.
June 11, 2015 at 3:59 pm
That’s so sweet – and you would have to try it!
June 11, 2015 at 7:33 pm
Of course. Thanks for reading!
June 11, 2015 at 8:03 pm
Smiling…and cringing! Delightful story. As a mother, I discouraged my curious son from the culinary arts for this very reason. ACK! The mess! I never thought about the wonder and joy he missed. Maybe I’ll be better with his children…in his kitchen! 😉
June 12, 2015 at 9:31 am
I must admit, it’s a constant battle to clean up after him. Toys scattered about the first, food all over the floor. But all it takes is a smile. Or laughter as I tickle him!!! That’s the best. Thanks for reading and taking the time to comment
June 12, 2015 at 2:31 pm
My pleasure! I admire your attitude. Wish I had had it when my son was young.
June 11, 2015 at 11:39 pm
Oh the lovely memories that evoked. Thank you. The little ones are a delight when learning and grandma’s always know how to taste without really tasting. Loved it!
June 12, 2015 at 9:28 am
Thank you!
June 12, 2015 at 5:36 am
Beautifully Written
June 12, 2015 at 9:28 am
Thank you!
June 12, 2015 at 4:14 pm
It all sounded pretty good until it got to the anchovies. haha! Your son is adorable.
June 17, 2015 at 2:12 pm
Thank you. Must agree with you on the anchovy part. I put that in for the shock factor!!!
June 17, 2015 at 5:17 pm
LOL!
June 13, 2015 at 6:25 am
Love the inspiration your son gave you if not the Cheesy volcano. It would have been okay if it had not been for the jam.
June 13, 2015 at 9:14 am
Thanks Irene. Glad you liked it.
June 13, 2015 at 5:55 pm
Oh, this made me laugh, Weltchy. What a combo! Excuse me while I go throw up! Very well written, piece. 🙂
June 13, 2015 at 5:58 pm
Thanks Amy. Glad I could make you laugh and throw up at the same time!!!
June 13, 2015 at 6:00 pm
Ha! Really, it’s quite a feat. :).
June 14, 2015 at 5:03 am
I just love ‘culinary haphazardry’. Gorgeous story – the little chef is delightful.
June 14, 2015 at 5:10 am
Thanks Margaret. He is indeed. Glad you liked that phrase btw, I was particularly tickled with it myself
June 14, 2015 at 9:58 am
Delicious story, I am guessing Grandma will probably have to eat seconds.
June 14, 2015 at 9:37 pm
Grandma has no choice indeed. Thanks for reading
June 14, 2015 at 11:12 am
Dear Weltchy,
“Cringed with excitement.” Love that line. Delightful story and for those of us who’ve had children, a very real day in the life.
Shalom,
Rochelle
June 14, 2015 at 9:36 pm
Thank you Rochelle!
June 15, 2015 at 3:20 pm
Great idea, and kids are so creative. I would have to pass on the anchovies though. Mike used to get half of the pizza made with them and I always thought he did it ’cause he knew I wouldn’t want the pieces that touched the salty vermin. Cute story! Nan
June 16, 2015 at 9:50 am
Thanks for reading Nan. I put the anchovy bit in as they are certainly no favourite of mine, in the hope of eliciting a “hot or cold” response. Seems it worked!
June 15, 2015 at 10:34 pm
Cute story, Weltchy. I bet Grandma cringed alright, but probably not with excitement. Teddy sounds like a typical two-year old. They can wear you out sometimes. 😀 — Suzanne
June 16, 2015 at 9:52 am
He does indeed. Took him 2 and a bit hours to fall asleep last night. Very restless. Anyway, fingers crossed for tonight. And thank you for reading!
June 17, 2015 at 10:26 am
Kids always make a mess in the kitchen don’t they? I hope Grandma didn’t taste Teddy’s concoction.
June 17, 2015 at 3:35 pm
They do indeed. Normally all over the floor as well. Thanks for reading
June 18, 2015 at 1:26 am
This is lovely – got a nearly-4 year old who loves helping in the kitchen, so I felt this one. 🙂
From a writing perspective, its great too – the tiny hands slamming, the dictator, even “Nana Look!”, I got a good picture of this in my head.
Well done.
