Below is my 100 word (ish) submission to the Friday Fictioneers. Photo prompt this week is courtesy of Rochelle Wisoff Fields.
This is my first post in quite a few weeks, what with work, moving house, general tiredness and a personal promise to finish off a 4k word short story (that’s been hanging around since March) conspiring to rob me of inspiration. But, I’m back in the arena, so to speak and I hope you enjoy my latest efforts.
As always, comments are appreciated. I will try to read everyone’s submission, but with submissions reaching triple digits each week, it’s sometimes difficult to get round to each one. Therefore, I will tend to read those who I follow, or who like / comment my story. And finally, I also try for a random selection from the list.
The Friday Fictioneers are a friendly group of online writers from all over the globe who endeavour to create short but fantastical tales with which to enthral and inspire both reader and writer alike. The genres and styles of writing are varied, so there is something for everyone to be found within its midst.
The Airplane Technique
‘Dadda, Dadda!’
A Heartwarming cry grabs my attention. Looking down, I see arms raised imperiously, a child’s demand to be picked up.
‘Up we go!’
Scooping down to lift him in the air, my words are greeted with squeals of enthusiasm, legs kicking wildly as we begin a well rehearsed game.
Spinning round, I hold him with arms outstretched; accompanied by the imaginary thrum of aircraft engines. We mimic a series of swoops and stalls, imagination taking us to the skies above.
Then a call is heard, a siren that ends the fun of the game.
‘Dinner.’

Dear Weltchy,
Nice to see you back here. And your story…awwwww…how sweet. I can almost hear that toddle giggle with glee. Nice one.
shalom,
Rochelle

Thanks for reading Rochelle. It is good to be posting again. Glad you enjoyed my story, inspired by my son no less!

Absolutely adorable, the penultimate line gives the impression of a much more daunting ending than being called for dinner. But I suppose for a young child though any end to his game would seem daunting and utterly unfair. A great little story, well done. 😀
July 30, 2014 at 9:43 am
Thanks for reading. I was tempted to change the ending to something more sinister, but I felt the core of the story should be one of joy

It’s always lovely to read a well written joyful piece. I used to find that a lot of my writing leaned towards the darker themes because they were easier to write, but once you get your head around humor and, well niceness without being over the top of cliche, sweet pieces can become some of your best writing I found.

Weltchy, Welcome back! I liked the story, ending and all. It was very sweet. I could just see the little guy swinging around, and Dad enjoying it just as much. Well written. 🙂 —Susan

Awww, that was nice. Sweet story, Weltchy! Awesomely good.
July 30, 2014 at 4:48 pm
Thanks. I said I needed to do a happy story the previous post. Just didn’t realise it would be nearly two months before I posted it

I know that game very well, and the disappointment of the dinner siren as well.
July 30, 2014 at 5:02 pm
It’s a game played all the time. If he grows up a pilot, he’ll have me to thank in later life. I may even point him toward this story as proof!
July 30, 2014 at 12:12 pm
Lovely heart-warming story, Weltchy 🙂
Kids love planes. Great that dad played along.
The game can continue later, after dinner!
Time to refuel the engines 🙂

Our children bring us a lot of joy. Admittedly they can also be a pain in the backside, but all is forgiven when my 20 month old gives me a hug! Thanks for stopping by!

“Dinner” is the best sort of siren to hear when a game must end. I like your imaginative take on the prompt that brings us into your world, Weltchy.
All my best,
Marie Gail

I love this story. Now that my niece is 3 years old, there is a new perspective for me to enjoy. I really liked the imperious demand, too – so spot on! 🙂
August 2, 2014 at 11:26 am
Imperious demand. Don’t I know it. My son is nearly two, so even stamping his foot is cute….
August 2, 2014 at 11:43 am
Mmm. My niece was being told off by her Daddy a few months ago, and she looked up at him and said, “But Daddy, I’m only little!” Sigh……

Such a familiar activity for most of us. I have been on all three sides of that so I can really relate. Nice story.

Very much from the heart this story as my son is 20 months old. Thanks for popping by

Great story. As I was reading it, I thought about flying the spoon into the open mouth of a toddler. This is one we can all relate to.
I’ll confess to not reading every story. Who has the time to read them all. Like you, I visit my favorite bloggers, those who leave comments, and pick some at random. Thanks for picking mine this week. I really enjoyed yours. I’ll be back.

Thanks for stopping by. Got a spare hour tonight, so thought I’d read a few more than usual. Glad I did!
